The aim of this unit is for students to gain a deep understanding of what data is, how it acquires value as information, and the importance of reliability, validity, and transparency in managing information used in everyday life and during crisis situations. The unit aims to develop citizens with digital, scientific, and critical literacy, capable of contributing to the resilience of society against natural hazards.

After completing the lesson, students will be able to:

12.1.1 What “data” means and why it is important

Explain what “data” means.
Identify examples of data from everyday life (e.g., temperature, rainfall, etc.).
Describe how data is transformed into information and why it is crucial for decision-making, especially in crisis or disaster situations.
Distinguish between reliable and unreliable data by identifying their sources.
Recognize data used in daily life.
Explain how data accuracy and reliability affect personal and collective safety.

12.1.2 Reliability and validity of data

Explain the concepts of reliability (trust in the source) and validity (accuracy of data).
Identify characteristics of unreliable information.
Distinguish fake news and misinformation in emergency situations.
Identify official and reliable information sources in Greece and internationally (government agencies, scientific institutions, international organizations).

12.1.3 The data life cycle in crisis situations

Describe the data life cycle, from raw data to actionable decision-making.
Identify and manage critical data used in natural hazard response.
Apply, through examples, digital tools used by agencies in emergency management.

12.1.4 Open data and information sources for citizens

Distinguish open data and understand its importance for democracy, transparency, and innovation.
Identify open data sources in Greece and Europe.
Describe how open data supports prevention, early warning, response, and recovery from disasters.
Recognize that open data is freely available for use, modification, and redistribution.
Identify limitations and challenges, particularly regarding privacy protection and GDPR compliance.
